Louron Valley

All of a sudden, the mountains open up, revealing a quiet valley that's tranquil without being sleepy, conservative without being backwards, innovative and yet respectful of its traditions and way of life. Under the watchful eye of its big sister, Saint-Lary, the Louron valley is flourishing.

Cradled by majestic peaks, the lake reflects the myriad colours of this idyllic valley nestled between the Peyresoude and Val Louron-Azet cols. Villages are harmoniously scattered along the south-facing mountain sides. Each of them holds marvels of its very own: Romanesque chapels with wonderful murals, created to give thanks to God for the fruitful trade of leather and wool between the French valley and its Spanish neighbour. These chapels, masterpieces that somehow survived the wars, are now listed as heritage monuments.
