The village of Argelès-Gazost stretches out across wide, welcoming plains, last stop before the road goes steeply winding up through the high passes of the Pyrenees. The upper town is a pretty array of flowery streets, panoramic terraces, stairs and fountains. The thermal district luxuriously rolls out its opulent mansions, leafy park, casino and thermal baths.
While, in the distance, razor-sharp peaks claw at the sky, here all is soft, all is mild. Including the weather. This makes it an ideal life-sized playground where you can have a go at all kinds of outdoor fun. How about starting with the vast Hautacam leisure park and trying out mountain sledges, Segway and downhill karting? Then you could go for a tree-to-tree adventure course or visit the outdoor waterpark...Or go to the Parc Animalier des Pyrénées, you can see otters, izards, bear, bighorn sheep, marmots, wolves and many other animals living in semi-freedom!
And, of course, make sure you don't miss out on visiting the major sites, all within easy reach: Gavarnie, Tourmalet, Pic du Midi, Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne, not forgetting Lourdes. True explorers may also discover a well-kept secret, the Val d'Azun... This marvellous little valley is sprinkled with a dozen charming small mountain villages with slate roofs and stone walls. This is the countryside as it's always been, traditions and all - and the farmhouse cheese is just fantastic.
